Susan White, a married woman in her twenties and working as a hairdresser, signs
up for an Open University course because she is eager to learn about English
literature. She changes her name to Rita because Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita
Mae West is her favourite book. Her husband strongly opposes her decision and urges
her to have a baby instead. At the university she meets her tutor, Frank Bryant,
who is an unsuccessful middle-aged academic with a drink problem who has no
experience in teaching working-class students but has agreed to tutor OU students
because he desperately needs the money. Overcoming his initial repulsion at teaching
literature to an entirely uneducated person, his ambition to turn Rita into a
respectable and educated member of society gets the better of him. When he sees how
quickly Rita learns and how eager she is, he falls in love with his 'creation' but
fails to see that she is no longer dependent on him.
